About Suliit

Built in Maryland to give independent sellers a fair place to work.

Suliit was founded in 2018 by Robert Barber in Prince Frederick, Maryland. The idea was straightforward: too many marketplaces treated independent sellers as inventory to be squeezed and shoppers as clicks to be redirected. There was room for a platform that treated both like adults.

How Suliit started

Before starting Suliit, Robert spent several years working with small retailers and service providers along the Chesapeake — furniture makers, boutique owners, tradespeople, a handful of accountants. What they had in common was that the internet was supposed to help them, and mostly it hadn't. They were paying subscription fees to a half-dozen tools they didn't understand, competing for search terms on platforms that also sold their competitors' products, and losing customer relationships to whichever marketplace owned the checkout.

Suliit began as an alternative: a marketplace that lets an independent seller show a real storefront, own their customer relationship as far as the law and platform allow, and pay a predictable price. The first version launched in 2018 with fewer than one hundred sellers, mostly regional. The platform has grown steadily since then and today serves sellers across the country.

Our mission

To connect buyers with independent sellers of products and services through a marketplace that is transparent about how it works, honest about what it charges, and built to be dependable in the long run.

Our vision

A digital commerce landscape where independent sellers can compete on the quality of what they make and how they treat customers — not on their ability to master a shifting set of platform mechanics.

What we value

  • Transparency. Prices, fees, policies, and ownership are stated plainly. No fine print, no dark patterns at checkout.
  • Independence. Sellers own their storefront presentation, their customer messages, and their product data. If a seller leaves Suliit, they can export what's theirs.
  • Accountability. When something goes wrong — a late shipment, a dispute, a wrong charge — there is a documented procedure and a real person to talk to.
  • Restraint. We add features when they solve a real problem for buyers or sellers, not to justify a redesign.

How the marketplace operates

Sellers apply, verify their identity and business information, and choose a plan. Once approved, they build a storefront and list products or services. Buyers browse the marketplace, place orders, and pay through the platform. Suliit handles the payment flow, communicates order status, and steps in when there is a dispute. Sellers ship or deliver what they've promised; Suliit pays out on the agreed schedule.

Suliit itself is not the seller of record for goods and services listed by third parties. Sellers are the merchants; Suliit is the marketplace that hosts and coordinates the transaction. That distinction is important — it means product decisions, quality, and warranty terms ultimately live with the seller, and it's why our seller policy is written the way it is.

Our team

Suliit is a small, U.S.-based team split between a Prince Frederick office and remote staff along the East Coast. Support, trust and safety, and payments operations are all handled in-house. We do not outsource customer service overseas, and we do not use offshore ticket queues to answer disputes.

Where we're headed

The next few years are about depth, not sprawl: better seller analytics, clearer buyer protection procedures, faster payouts, and continued investment in fraud prevention. We are not trying to become the largest marketplace on the internet. We are trying to be the marketplace independent sellers keep coming back to.
